Hello. I would like to expand the hard drive space on my computer by adding a 3TB SATA hard drive into my computer.
This is my first try inserting a new hard drive and I have never seen it being done before either. So far, I found my computer eligible to hold another hard drive i.e. it has the tray, the SATA port on the motherboard, and a spare power cable.
Now, I bought my hard drive and a SATA cable to go along with it, but I just realized I need a cable to convert the power port. Now, the youtube videos I've seen till now attach two wires. However, the hard drive I have has 3 ports.

I do know, that the one on the far right is for the power while the one next to it is the SATA port. However, I don't know what the one on the far left does.

You have the HD in your hand. What does the decal/sticker -OR- embossed on plastic,e tc. ID that port as. The manual or support website to get manual will explain what any port does. recheck you packing, maybe a .PDF file in your files of HD package. Otherwise, as already explained to you, it probably isn't used, all you need is power and data connection.
BUT!!! you gave no clue to the PC you plan to install in and 3Tb brand. A 3Tb HD may push or not be allowed(limited to 2.2gb) in XP setups or if later OS, may need some s/w patch or what has been provided from the maker. Again, the support website of HD provides these details for you. Further, install s/w a real plus to better handle all this if so supplied. Read, and read again what needs to be done and YouTube videos are a plus as you already know. The actual h/w part should be easy its the final s/w or acknowledge the HD presence that may cause problem. So, don't rush this and take your time when you proceed. I suggest you do a back-up prior to the install as safeguard. good luck
