windows media player

My avi files wont play in my windows media player. The sound comes out fine but the picture comes on like some sort of light show. I tried to uninstall my version but it wont come up in my programs list. I did a search for it and it comes up as a shortcut with no way to uninstall. so I cant uninstall or re-install. when I try to download the latest version it tells me that the version I have installed is the latest version and its not possible to install. How can I fix this?
