Why did Firefox open one ccsitt file 2000 times?

Using CNet TechTracker I several times tried to download progam updates with Firefox. In Options I set cbsitt to be opened with Firefox. Clicking "smart or standard download" in one case resulted in over 2000 new tabs. Nothing worked until I closed down the computer.
