Software to scan HDD

Hey, so my laptop crashed today. I had the blue screen of death on start up and my computer just wouldn't start. My dad took out my HDD and tried to open it on his comp, which it wouldn't do without formatting it. I don't want to format it, but I was told that software exists that will scan the HDD and allow me to access files that I had saved on it, which is all I want to do anyway. I can pay $60 for every 10GB, which isn't worth it for me cause then I'd be paying an arm and a leg. So I was just wondering if anyone knew what kind of program I am looking for, cause I'm lost as to what to search for.
