Laptop or Ipad - What's Best?

I'm having trouble with my laptop which is just over a year old. It was working fine until I let a 6 year old play games on it and she dropped it. The system crashed and fixed itself but some of the programmes disappeared. Since then it closes unexpectedly with a warning that Windows is shutting down for some convoluted reason that I don't understand and am too old to learn about.
I have a feeling that this will keep happening and eventually the thing will give up altogether. I'm thinking of buying a replacement to save myself future hassle but I don't know whether I should be buying a tablet (Ipad?) rather than a laptop. I use the computer mostly for surfing the net, booking airline tickets and hotels, and playing games like Farmville. Although I got tired of FV, I would like to be able to play should I want to. Similarly with word processing, spreadsheets, etc., although I don't have much use for them I wouldn't want to be prevented from using them because the machine couldn't manage it. I like to bring my laptop with me when travelling just in case I need it. I want something that won't be obsolete within a few years.
I'm looking for suggestions as to what to buy. Are tablets the way of the future? Can they do everything a laptop can? What should I be looking for in terms of operating systems, ram, disc capacity, graphic cards, etc?
