The new PC or the files? I don't know what you mean by MS Word has "fur" you can't erase. Is this some sort of typo in a file that's been created? You cannot transfer programs from on PC to another from a flash drive but you can copy files quite easily. Unless they are virus infected, they aren't a problem. However, you cannot read them without a proper application installed that recognizes their format.

Besides a flash drive, burn to a CD/DVD and save those files as 1st order of business.

The new Word and old Word are compatible but there maybe some variance. The new Word will accept the old Word docs. but you need to convert and/or re-edit them if some comntrol chars. pop-up or similar. If your plan is to install the old Word/Works into the new system, well that's usually not recommended, but they will install. At least try the already installed plain Word(default) of new system with the old files. As for any possible corruption, I don't see that happening, unless you excluded some detail. If you have embedded controls like "itialized lettering", etc., or anything that makes the wording stand-out this is where some control may become visible.
