detecting viruses in cd/dvd

I have a library book with a cd-rom with practice files. Is there a way to test the cd or dvds for viruses or other threats before I load it on my computer? I have a Dell dimension 5100 xp professtional. Thank you for any ideas.

1. Keep shift-key pressed while you insert the DVD. That suppresses any autorun that's on it.
2. Start your antivirus and let it scan the disk.

Slect media scans

Most AV pgms. will check any media present on a system, BUT you need to select or option that. I do recommend you "turn-OFF" the autorun feature and then reboot, mount disc and check it. Still applies also to flash drives as well. This maybe the required time your firewall must be capable of stopping any out going attempts to connect to www. This maybe normal to allow it(after review), but you MUST be diligent in case malware is at work here. i offer this as another area to check.

hello and yes you can easy check for a virus ,if you have a antivirus
then it should have check disc or my computer will let you scan for a virus on a disc by just clicking the drive with the CD/DVD in the drive, now when we take this in mind we ask what is a virus on a disc
for some companies will put cookies on, that will come up as a virus and they are tracking how many times you put the disc in the drive .
if you write to the company then they should give you a program that they use to get rid of it .the trouble is if you ever go back to factory settings or to an early time before you got rid then it will come back again and you have to get rid again in the same way,so it does show a virus but its just for the company so they can spy ,hope this helps . regards.

1. Have a clean pc by:
2. Have had the ms malicious software removal-tool ran.
3. Delete all those nasty toolbars. ('ve got a cnet-article about it)
4. Have the ms-windows defender.
5. Have the ms- security essentials.
6. Because by now you've spend 0,00
7. Right-click the apparatus with the cd/dvd
8. Run that ms-check.

Kindly purchase a Genuine and Paid Antivirus e.g Quickheal, Nortan etc may be from online.This will solve your problem permanently. I have laptop at home and never had any virus problem for over 7 years.

I purchased and installed Norton's AntiVirus 2010 with Antispyware last month. I just wasn't sure if it automatically checked a "borrowed" disk for viruses or not. I appreciate the answers I have received, but I could really use directions that are written in very simple terms. I don't understand alot of the terms used in the replies I received.
