Computer newbies forum: PC HDMI Problem; Intermittent Screen Blanks

My monitor native resolution is 1440x900. That is what my PC video card has selected when I look at the screen resolution option in Control Pnl. I've also tried other resolutions with the same result but when I changed my resolution back to my original setting of 1024x768, I've had no screen blanking issues in ~3 hours. That seems to have made the issue disappear. I was previously using this resolution via VGA without any issues. This same resolution is working ok via DVI/HDMI. The problem appears when I try any other resolution except for 1024x768.

Thanks for the info! Since I'm not well-versed in PC technology I didn't research the BFG GT 220 card before buying it but it seems be meeting my daily PC needs, with this possible exception regarding my DVI/HDMI issue.

I lowered my resolution back to its original VGA setting 1024x768 and the problem is no longer present. I'll leave it this way for now as I actually prefer the lower resolution since I'm not a fan of the smaller icons, mouse pointer, text size. I know that I can tweek those settings but with the higher resolutions, I've never been as confortable viewing my monitor as with the lower ones.

I did get an immediate improvement when I switched to the DVI/HDMI input vs the VGA input. The edge "shimmering" and fluctuations in text characters disappeared. I also noticed an improvement in the overall color definition and definition of screen content in all applications.

I know this post is a couple years old but I thought I'd still post as I have the same issue of intermittent black screens for reasons unknown and in no obvious pattern. I bought my Insignia NS-LCD42HD-09 almost 4 years ago and this started about 2 years after I bought it. I've tried connecting via HDMI(TV) to HDMI(PC) and HDMI(TV) to DVI(PC). This has occurred using different resolutions 1280x720(720p) 1360x768 (Used most often) up to my TV's native resolution 1920x1080(1080p). I currently have an HP slimline s5360f with ATI HD4350 video card but the same issue occurred on previous PC HP slimline s3560f with nVidia 9500GT video card, nor has this occurred when I connect my PC to my other HDTV 32LG30 720p. I thought this was a PC issue but it continued to occur after I replaced my PC & doesn't occur on my other TV or 20" LG LCD display so it's a TV issue. Thankfully I bought extended warranty, I just need to call in for service. Did you ever find a solution?

Thanks for the input. For my needs, I'm satisfied with what I have at present, the blanking issue is not present when using 1024x768 via DVI/HDMI adapter cable. I'm going to try installing a straight HDMI/HDMI cable next to see the results. But I won't be returning my monitor for a replacement as it meets my needs as an infrequent TV viewer and my primary PC monitor.

My TV/PC combo is 720p TV resolution and 1440x900 "PC" resolution if that helps with my situation.

When I checked my CT 220 Video Card outputs, it does have a connection that looks like a std HDMI socket but it's not the std type of socket. My HDMI cable wouldn't plug into this socket. Upon looking at an online review, this socket is an HDMI 1.3s type which should be compatible with my std HDMI cable. The picture of the card connector area indicates this is a std HDMI socket but my card doesn't have the std socket on it. Perhaps I can obtain an adapter to try it?

The HDMI socket on my card has the 45 deg corner on the lower right-hand corner of the socket as a normal HDMI socket shape but the left-hand side of the socket is shaped like a square without the 45 deg angle on the corner so my HDMI cable won't insert properly into the card's socket. I'm using a std HDMI cable with both corners of the socket having 45 deg angle corners on the end of the connectors.
