Mouse Doesn't Work with Laptop

Mouse Doesnt Work with Laptop:

I have a Dell Latitude D820 laptop and navigate (awkwardly) around the screen using the finger-controlled touch pad.
But, I prefer the traditional click-controlled mouse. So I bought a Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000. I installed the CD software successfully, rebooted, and plugged the mouse one of the laptop USB ports. Nothing happened and the mouse shows no sign of life.

Belated thought can this mouse be used with a laptop like mine?

P.S. - My laptop operates under Windows XP Professional.

USB mouse?

Wired? Wireless?

I have three Microsoft USB wireless mice and no drivers were needed, on XP Pro laptops.

Keep the "USB" plugged in and reboot.

if your laptop have more than one USB port, try plug it to the other ones. One of my HP laptop have 3 USB ports and only recognize my mouse on 2 of them.

And usually, most regular mice don't require driver installation. they're plug and play.

Further to my last and regressing ...

I have a circa 2006 Dell Latitude D820 laptop that ran fine under WIN XP Pro (as factory-installed by Dell) until it was attacked by a global virus that resisted all corrective measures. So I did a Dell-suggested reinstall of XP Pro.

[BTW THREE DELL CDS THAT CAME WITH THE LAPTOP: - (1) FOR REINSTALLING CD MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL SERVICE PACK 2; (2) FOR REINSTALLING DELL LATITUDE SYSTEM DRIVERS AND UTILITIES; AND (3) FOR REINSTALLING CYBERLINK POWERDVD 5.7 SOFTWARE.]

Rather than use the cumbersome (for me) D820 touch-pad navigation system I got a Kensington Pocketmouse Pro Wireless device at the time that was powered by a USB plug-in controller/receiver.

Before the recent XP Pro reinstall the Kensington mouse worked fine (except for the occasional battery replacement). After the reinstall, it no longer responded at all. I tried it in all three USB ports nothing. Thinking the mouse had somehow died I bought a USB-powered wired Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 and installed the software. The laptop recognized the software but not the hardware.

Finally I plugged in a SanDisk USB flash drive (that lights up at one end when contact is made). I got no response from any of the laptop USB ports.

Could the XP Pro reinstall have somehow disabled the D820s USB capability? [CURIOUSLY, I LEFT THE KENSINGTON USB CONTROLLER/RECEIVER ATTACHED WHEN REINSTALLING XP PRO. IN FACT IT STOPPED WORKING AS I WAS INSTALLING SUCCESSIVE DRIVERS FROM CD #2 ABOVE.]

Not being familiar with such matters Im asking for guidance here on hopefully getting USB (and mouse) capability back on the D820. Are we speaking BIOS here? < gasp! > Walk-through steps would be much preferred for this semi-literate in such matters. Its no fun being mouse-less.

P.S. what is a powered USB connector? The D820 has one of these as well.

If none of the USB devices work (as you state) while you think you installed all drivers I would do the following:
1. Check Device Manager what it has to say about USB-ports. If anything remarkable (such as none or yellow exclamation marks) reinstall the drivers.
2. If Device Manager OK and and they still don't work.
a. See if there is any diagnostic software on the utilities CD or in the F12 menu and run that.
b. Contact Dell tech support.

It surely should work after a full install of the OS and drivers. If not, it could be a hardware issue. Someone in India will talk you through.
