Computer newbies forum: WinXP SP2 Download Too Big for Dial-Up???

You have a couple of answers to this in the XP forum where I saw it first.

is that it's installing as it trickles in from what I understand. I prefer to download things as one file and choose myself when to install it, if at all, so that I always have the file around for a later reinstall should I format the drive and have to start over again without having to get the file a second time.

Like Toni mentions above, I also prefer to have the "full" installer file saved to a disk so it can be applied now and later, if I ever need to do so. As a result, you might try finding a friend or family member with a broadband connection (fast downloads) and a CD burner. You can download the 266 MB full installer package from the link below and simply burn it to a CD. Once it's there, take the CD to your home computer and install the Service Pack from the CD by simply double clicking on the executable file.

I've installed the new Service Pack 2 on a number of WinXP computers so far, most of them using the CD that I burned.

...Microsoft is making noise that SP2 will be necessary for any future updates to XP. We'll see. I'm doing a fair amount of testing before installing it on all our work machines, but our IT management is telling us to get it installed as soom as testing finishes.

If you could post those links, that would be great. Searching the XP forum for SP2 brings up a LOT of threads.

Norton pgms. may experience a problem(per.firewall) as well as some of MS photo mixer or others. But, all I've only seen is repeated hangs or freezes for no explanation. MS has already posted(as you've provided) some pgms./svcs that maybe in conflict BUT that may only apply to how the system is configured. SP2 is causing soem server based system to gasp. In reading some info from Sunbelt news which provides mucho info on servers, they suggest to go slow or try a test system as would any large network IT manager should do on such a large patch. Fixes are supposely in the pipeline but heck I'm a pinon at the end of chain.

I'm also hearing rumbling that SP2 should be called a "upgrade" rather than a "patch". I've got enough headaches already before SP2 why add more. As for Norton PF, maybe a Norton fix is available or I'll check some more.

YOU really DOWNLOADED WinXP SP2 in 50 minutes...unBULEE..VABLE!!! I have WinXp Professional (compaq 7550, celeron 2.8 mhz, 80 gigs)with a 56k modem and I am looking at 3 hrs plus...am I doing something wrong??? Intermediate user...HELP!!

I updated my computers at night, I don't have restricted dial-up so I left the internet on. It disconnected once, but when I re-connected, WinXP 2 started where it left off. Yes, it took about 5 hours to download each computer, but I haven't had any other problems.
