At least it does with the Verizon service in our area. (I have seen a few "ActionTec modem/router combos supplied by Verizon here as well.) I've got Verizon with a 3 MB service here and the Versalink provides wireless throughout our house and reception is neglible if I walk down the street about 100 feet. It IS a "gateway" modem/router combo. My business service also uses a Westell wireless modem/router gateway.. It's work well for us.. Some are not completely satisfied on these forums with the Versalink but I and my customers here have fared well..
I would certainly try out the "supplied" items provided by Verizon before purchasing a second router.. There are ways to provide a stronger signal if it's just a little weak. High gain antennas, etc.

I currently use Verizon with Versalink and just like you said it works about 100 feet outside my house. I have went over to my neighbors house plenty of times with my laptop and I still have the great connection that I would get if I was in my house. I've had this for quite some time now and it works great. Hope this helped a little:-P

Unfortunately Verizon is not going to supply much with the plans they have going on now. No router or modem. I have purchase it for $55.
Worth every dime.

I've never seen Verizon fail to supply at least the modem.. It's part of their "self installation kit" which allows you to setup the entire system by yourself, then create and validate your account and connection.

LOL Hi Grif,
With this plan they "may" give you filters and a phone spitter for free but thats it. For just the modem is $39.99. Now this is for a 1 Mbps/384 Kbps plan for $19.99 "without" phone service. Thats the reason we are getting it because it will be cheaper than phone + dialup.
Are you brave enough to take a guess on what kinds of speeds I may actually see? If it helps, there is supposed to be fiber opic about 1000 ft. from are house.

...and as such, it's not really proper to simply gripe here.. At the same time, if a question comes up regarding the issue, it would certainly be proper to express your opinion.
I guess I've been lucky with Verizon.. I've got DSL services with them at home and at a couple of our remote offices.. Both have worked fine for me.. Obviously, your experience has been different.
