How to Stop WP from making "Read Only" documents

My friend called me for help with her WP and I tried to guide her over the phone. She has WP version 11 or 12 on a 2 yr. old Dell. Im use to MS Word 2003. My friend keeps getting her documents turning into Read Only and must be saved with a different name. Upon saving it with a new name the new saved one is in Read Only.
Last night she was trying to set up letterhead stationary [doc #1]. She was having trouble getting the typed lines centered (some wouldn't move to the left, even with left justified clicked).
So, I suggested she start over with a new page [doc. #2]. Next, I told her to open up her resume' document and copy/paste the heading from that on her new doc [doc. #2]. She did and saved it. Now she had 3 things open. Next, she returns to the resume' doc and closes it. Upon returning to Doc #1 to close that, it had turned to a Read Only doc. ((I don't recall if this was after she tried to save it just prior to closing it OR it was just Automatically turned into a READ ONLY.)).
Then I told her to fix something on Doc. #2, and it tells her it is a READ ONLY. What is going on? She never wants to see a READ Only on anything, ever. How can I help her stop this?
