Computer newbies forum: Create an association in the folder options control panel

If I remember correctly, even the free OpenOffice doesn't open .pub files. Publisher comes with some versions of Microsoft Office or as a standalone program.. Of course, if you're not going to use it often, it is expensive.. You might want to contact the sender of the file and have them create the item in a program that you already have..

Unfortunately, you've not given us enough information. Like telling the auto-repairman "I can't drive my car", we need something a little more specific to get us headed in the right direction.

Which email client are you using? Is it webmail or a stand-alone client like Outlook Express, or Microsoft Outlook? If you're only having problems opening attachments, please give us the file extension/file type of the attachment you're having problems with.. If you're having issues with opening the entire email message, please explain EXACTLY what is happening.

The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

...the first advice is to NOT open such attachments.. As long you're sure they're safe,SAVE them to your desktop first.. It gives your antivirus a change to better scan them.

Once the file is saved to your destkop, since you already have Power Point installed, in order to reset the file association, RIGHT click directly on the file, choose "Open With" from the menu, then select "Choose A Program". When the "Open With" box loads, place a CHECK mark in the box that says: "Always use this program to open this file type", then scroll through the various programs and double click on PowerPoint.. The file should open correctly.

If it does not, then it's possible the .pps file is from a newer version of PowerPoint, such as PP 2007.. If that's the case, then try downloading the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack from the link below..

Once you've installed the compatibility pack, there is a service pack that needs to be installed as well, so download the service pack immediately from the link below and install it after installing the main program. There are also addition Windows Updates following the service pack but this should get you going.:

It should allow you to open the newer version of Power Point.

I use windows XP. I have received an E-mail and tried to open. A notice said that I must have an association in the folder options control panel.How do I set one up?

...and if you already have Power Point or the viewer installed and you're not able to open the attachment from Outlook Express, then try saving the file to your desktop and open it from there. It should open correctly from the desktop and in fact, is safer to open after it's been saved to the computer.. During the "save" process, your onboard antivirus scans the file to ensure it's clean.

.xls is opened by either one of those programs. If you don't have either of them, then try downloading/installing the Excel Viewer from the links below, then install Excel Viewer SP2 update,:

The files listed here are all ZIP files, which contain a REG (Registry) file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.

Can you open regedit thru Start>Run then type in regedit then click OK? If you can you would first unzip those reg file fixes then open regedit, click on File>Import and locate those reg files (one at a time)hilite the reg file and click the Open button.

It may take a little work but try this:

First, you'll want to have a Windows CD for use on a "repair" installation later, maybe. If the cleanup tools work correctly, things may resolve themselves easily. If not, you may need the Windows CD to run a repair installation.

Next, on separate clean computer, download the free Avira Rescue Disc program and create a bootable rescue disc using the instructions below. Once that's done, boot the computer using the Rescue disc and make sure to select the option to "Rename files" per the instructions, then run the scan using the disc.. You don't need to login to your computer as the rescue disc will run "outside" of Windows.

Next, follow the instructions below which you already have some of the tools for. The rescue disc should have eliminated enough of theproblem to allow "rkill" to run and allow you to install malwarebytes, etc.. In some case, after the installation of Malwarebytes, the actual "mbam.exe' file will be removed by the malware.. You can easily replace it by copying the file from a separate computer where Malwarebytes is installed, renaming it, then placing in the correctly folder listed below.:

Download ALL of the tools below on a friend or family member's, CLEAN computer and copy them to a CD or flash drive, then transfer them to the problem machine.

First, please download and run the following tool to help allow the removal programs below to run. (courtesy of Grinler at BleepingComputer.com)
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

IMMEDIATELY after running the "Rkill" tool above, run/install the Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware installer and update files from the links below which you've also copied to a CD or flash drive, and transfered to the problem machine. Do NOT restart the computer after running Rkill.

Once downloaded and before transferring Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware to the problem machine, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "Gogetum.exe", then copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive.. Transfer the file to the problem machine, then install the "Gogetum.exe" file, then run the update to get the program current.. After that, run a full system scan and delete anything it finds.

In a few situations, in order for the program to run, it was also necessary to rename the main "mbam.exe" file also after installing it.. It resides in the C:\Programs Files\Malwarebytes Antimalware folder....

I have Windows XP, IE 6, and Outlook Express. While trying to open an email attachment, I get the following error message 'Create an association in the folder options control panel'. The file extension is .pub. Somebody please help me. Thank you.

Creating file associations for your email program to open attachments is very different to making file associations for the OS in general.

Generally OE is not an application launcher although it tries its best, but if you save the attachment to your hard drive then scan it with your anti-virus scanner before opening it, (email attachments are a large source of viruses and other malware nowadays), then the OS may be able to open that file.

There is not a free viewer for Microsoft Publisher files so as Edward says, you could also ask the sender to resend the file to you in a format your system can open.
