Computer newbies forum: No sound from laptop to TV with HDMI

Hi there bud,

You seem to have had great success with others similat to this so thought i'd ask you if you could help me...
I tried what you said, went to Control Panel, Sounds, Playback. But when I get there, there is no HDMI sound to click on. Only Speakers and Realtek Audio. Do you know of any other ways I can get my HDMI to work? Using HP Pavillion DV6000 PC, using Vista, and viewing on Panasonic Viera Plasma.

I have HP G60 laptop. I tried your instructions but 'Set Default' button is disabled even if I select HDMI Audio.
When I navigate to advanced properties GREEN checked icon next to HDMI Audio Out.
Any suggestions?

where using same laptop.... i also experienced same problem... just follow this instruction... hope it will help you
go to control panel
choose the sound icon
double click HDMI ( or just right click then properties)
check if the device usage is enable
if so... choose advance ( it's on the top choices.. parallel to general, and supported formats)
choose the rate ( try testing it so that you will hear the sounds)... choose the best rate for you...

Ok so i'm having the same issues here.

I have a Toshiba a505 s6005 satelite laptop (windows 7 64 bit) with a new samsung plasma TV tc-p50u50.
i have about 10 HDMI cables, all with this result.

I have tested my brand new HDMI cable with my xbox 360, which works flawlessly. I have checked my settings (control panel>sounds), which indicate only speakers and realtek digital output. when realtek digital output is set to default, all sound shuts off. When HDMI cable is plugged in, there is no change in what is displayed. All drivers are completely up to date (just checked about 2 minutes ago).

SO driver is good, hdmi is plugged in and functional, but still no sound through the TV.

Any other ideas besides a friggan 3.5 mm headphone jack?

any help is appreciated

Before connecting the HDMI cable, Set the default sound output to SPDIF Interface in the Control panel --- > Sound settings. Then connect HDMI cable.

I see on here that you've helped people find out how to get into sound properties and, with there HDMI cord connected to their flat screen and computer, select the flat screen as there default sound device. I've done this. However it still does not work. So I looked at the properties for the Flat screen and it gives me options of what sound formats my digital receiver can decode: DTS Audio, Dolby Digital, and Microsoft WMA Pro Audio. If you're on this screen it allows you to test if any work. None do on my computer.

So is there an audio decoder pack that can decode the encoded audio signal between my laptop and tv or maybe a driver? I'm sick of the weak laptop speakers...

I have a ASUS laptop running vista and a 32" RCA flat screen

This area is FULL of trouble as "there is no standard." Take a moment and see what a mess this is and it's why you see so many bad answers out there.

Happy to read my answer helped you but others flame me that it didn't fix theirs. But I'll keep trying as I find more ways to solve this.

Had the same problem with a HDMI connection between a Sony 64-bit laptop running Windows 7 and a Sony HDTV. Got the picture to transfer from the laptop to the TV but without the sound. After trying all kinds of advice, I stumbled on the answer and can't remember now how I found it, but here it is: Turn off the laptop and connect the HDMI cable between it and the TV. Set the TV INPUT to the same HDMI port you made the connection to. (There are four HDMI ports on my TV.) Turn on the laptop and do what you did before to get the laptop screen on the TV. Then look in the Notification Area of the laptop (lower right end of the Task Bar on the desktop screen) and find the little symbol that says "Show hidden icons" when you mouse over it. Click on that and mouse over the iccns that pop up until you find one that says "HDMI." (It won't be there unless you've turned things on as above.) DOUBLE click the icon and a box will appear with two sound devices pictured on it. The microsoft device will be set as the default, Highight the other device and click on "Set default" just below the pictures. Then click OK. You'll be in business. Note that sound on the laptop will work normally after you disconnect from the TV with this new default setting.

I have been reading these types of forums for some time but can not yet solve a problem i have w hdmi output sound from my hp g60 laptop to new samsung lcd tv. sound is great from playstation on same port with same cable. At one point the laptop hdmi sound did work. I have vista home premium. It tells me that i have th latest drivers if i try to update. test says that hdmi sound is functioning properly. sound bar moves up and down during playback and if i turn up the tv @ playback or test i can hear a faint clicking tone. i would appreciate any input if this sounds familiar THANKS


"set as defualt" is never an option that it will allow me to click on in cntrol panel \ sounds although you can see it

Depending on the computer, a lot of times times when you use HDMI, the audio doesn't work. You might try using a separate audio cable from the computer to TV for sound.

PLEASE HELP! I just spent 2.5 hrs on the phone with HP Tech Support - no resolution.

HP pavilion DV-6T laptop
Vista 64 bit
HDMI cable from laptop direct to TV
TV: Sharp LC465B57UN

When the laptop is connected to the TV they both detect each other and the sound defaults to the HDMI, says "working" and when tested the green bars indicated sound is being played but no sound from the TV. The sound mixer on my laptop has the volume up across the board and clearly indicates HDMI.

NO sound comes from the laptop when the HDMI is connected but works fine when it's not, as does the TV on other inputs that are also connected via HDMI.

I do not currently have any external speakers, etc connected to the TV.

The TVs settings are simple and all indicate no issue.

Please any suggestions. HP tech support said they could only recommend defaulting to factory restore settings (only bought the laptop 6 months ago and I do NOT have a lot of crap on it) OR a hardware problem, something about an intel chip ... I don't know what to do! I could take it to a friends house and plug into a different TV I guess...
