Unwanted programs Windows XP

I have Windows XP home SP1, OE6&IE6 and would like to remove some of the high MB programs. I am not sure which ones I can safely remove that don't need to be on programs, that will not affect the operation of my PC. I don't know what some of them are. Is there any place on the web that can help me with this or can anyone tell me what I can safely remove, also I don't play the games, don't visit porn sites, don't download music, mostly it's used for e-mail, paying bills,looking up information and sending and receiving pictures of my Grandchildren.
I have 22.9GB of free disk. I am also thinking very hard about going to Mozilla as an alternative to IE6.

Larry,

In order to verify which programs you don't need, you might consider searching for their names on http://www.google.com/.

In addition, the site below should give you some start up program names that can safely be removed. These are the names of the actual program executable that loads at start up in "msconfig":

If you're concerned about any specific ones, list them here and we might be able to help.

This may seem strange but ther is a site that will check your computer and tell you which files are optional and which are necessary. No cost to you and you can do it without giving your name, etc. Heard it from a customer at a computer store. It is www.pcpitstop.com. Used it to diagnose 2 computers in Mexico on holidays and fixed their problems. A real winner site.

Larry,

Rather than remove programs from XP, go to BlackViper.com and see the programs you can safely disable through Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Services . If you really want to remove programs, open Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs, and then Add/Remove Windows components. Uncheck programs you don't want to operate on your computer, and proceed from there ( MSN Explorer is a good candidate ). As far as browsers go, Mozilla is great, much faster than IE, but there is another program you may want to try, called MyIE2. Like Mozilla, it has great pop up and spam controls, but is like IE6 in it's interface. You can get to either by going to the Google search engine (www.google.com), and enter the names ( Mozilla, MyIE2 ) in the search bar. Good Luck.

Sounds like a good Idea, I have already removed some such as promos, and some games. As far as MyIE2, from reading the threads I think Mozilla is most likely safer.
