Computer newbies forum: LAN finds router, but can't connect to internet

There's no problem with Roadrunner, because this computer is connected to it right now through the same modem. I also got the same error message at work while trying to connect through a wireless router to Verizon DSL.

Right now there is no error message when I try to get on the internet. Instead I get the "The page cannot be displayed" message in the browser (IE). It's not an IE related problem because I can't connect to AIM either, nor can I update Symantec/Norton. I blieve the previous message was "this page cannot be found" then it had "work offline" and "try again" as choices. Try again didn't work.

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2004, updated May 15, and I last scanned for viruses, etc. last night.

I'm also running AdAware 6.0, also last run last night. I'm very good about running both Norton and AdAware faithfully on my computers.

I tried connecting directly to the cable modem just now, and that didn't seem to work either, which seems odd. I normally don't need a user name and password to connect.

Earlier in the week I tried to set up a home network, then gave up because it wouldn't work, and we really didn't have a need for it right now. I could still get online after that, but I'm wondering if something is affecting it now. Is there a way that I can reset all my network settings to as if I'd never touched them? I have no idea what they were or where they are at now, since no network was ever set up.

Ok, I gave in and called HP to get help.

Here's what I did per their instructions....

>control panel
>Network and Internet connections
>Network connections

Once in there I read the rep what connections were listed there. One of them was a "Bridge connection." She had me delete that. As soon as I deleted it, my internet connection was back.
