Primary Hard Drive - None ???

I was given a Dell Latitude CPi D300XT laptop. I hit the power button and it reads

"Primary hard disk 0 not found
" No bootable device(s) selected
" strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility

I his F2 and in the bios setup it reads "Pimary Hard Drive - None"

I was given no recovery disc and don't know where to go from here. It's OS is Windows98. Thanks for any help

I'd check to make sure the HDD is fully connected on the underside of the laptop.

How long has it been since you used it ?

that gave you the laptop either removed the HDD or it has crashed and is no longer usable, the third scenario it may have been erased of all data and OS. Check underneath to see if it has been removed, if it is still installed you have the two other choices to check.

I looked and see a 3 by 4 inch cover that slides off. There's something in there but I have no idea what it is.

Tha laptop was given to me by a friend who said it was last used 3 months ago.

Once there click the Manuals link in the menu on the left side of the page under the Support Catagory heading then download the 54724bk0.bk link. (Can't link direct as they are scripted links)

The info for locating the hard drive is under the heading (in the downloaded Acrobat file) of "Removing and Replacing Parts" then under the subheading of "Removing Field-Replacable Parts and Assemblies".

Having the manual will make working on it much simpler and less succeptable to "operator error".

A crashed OS or formatted hard drive wouldn't give you this message. It would say, "Missing operating system." Either the hard drive is not connected properly, or it is damaged, or it isn't there at all.
