Computer newbies forum: WHAT TYPE OF CD SHOULD I STORE DIGITAL PICTURES TO?

I learned the hard way that storing images on CD-RW's can be very iffy. They are not all that stable and I wound up losing about three or four out of every hundred, so definitely use CD-R's.

RW's may be OK for short term storage and transferring, but do not rely on them for permanent storage.

I must agree with Mr. Copeland. CD-R is the way to go. Also, make two copies and store in different places in case one CD gets damaged or destroyed. CD-R's are cheap. Images can be priceless.

Absolutely CD-R. If you ever want to share pictures with someone else (something that can be read on another computer)or if you want some assurance that the disk can be read in a few months, I would avoid CD-RW

Like magnetic media, the material used to store the data on CDs deteriorates over time. In the case of CD-Rs, it's generally decades.

However, CD-RW uses thinner layers, that can be burned away, one at a time (that's why they're ReWritable).
This makes the disk less stable. The material deteriorates in months.

I make backups of my backups and if they're extremely important pictures or documents, I make a copy to place in my bank's safety deposit box.

Cd-R's are one use recordable cd's that are very inexpensive. With CDRW you can "rewrite" the disk. With the cost of CD-R's so low there is no reason to purchase a CDRW disk. Certainly if you are only talking about digital pictures.

definetly a data cd. I made the mistake of using a memorex audio and all my photos disappeared after a few months.

CD-R is the best way. Also check out if the photo developers can accept your camera media as most now take a variety of media cards.

I only buy quality CDs and I have not ever had any trouble with either R or RWs. I use the RWs to accumulate Photos then transfer them to CD/R because of the cost factor. I also only send to others on CD/Rs because of cost but also not everyone I send to has the latest equipment and/or software so the Rs are the safest bet the receiver will be able to view them.

As such, storing music, or anything else has changed somewhat.. As to whether a CD-R with music will play on your DVD player, you'll need to check with the DVD player specifications. Most old DVD players for television use could not play CD-R disc... Now, most of the newer DVD players on computers and stand-alone models for televisions will play both CD-R music discs as well as DVD's..

If you're wanting those discs to universally play between a car stereo and your home DVD player, you'll want to keep the songs stored on a standard music CD-R. But, if you're only trying to save a large number of music files (.mp3, etc.) on a data-disc, you may want to incorporate the larger size of DVD disc which will hold a great deal more data..
