Computer newbies forum: Computer won't come on after power outage

Was it a general power outage for your whole area or was it just your home, caused by something shorting out in your PC ? Smells of burning usually don't mean that it's just a fuse gone in the power supply.

Remove the Power Lead BEFORE you take the top off. then have a good sniff to see if you can detect where the smell is coming from. I too would suggest that the Power Supply is the likely culprit.

PROBLEM.... if it's something on the Motherboard that blew your power supply, it will probably blow a new one as well.

If it is the mobo, it Should Not blow a new supply. The power supplies ALL have overcurent and overvoltage shutdown protective circuits built in. The supply will shut itself off well before a short circuit on the mobo could hurt it. So if a new supply tries to turn on and immediately shuts off, something on the mobo is bad [or the mobo itself].

You may have both a zapped supply and a mobo [or CPU or ???], however trying a new power supply first should not result in the loss of the new supply.

same inrush current. Not sure that I feel that your example proves anything.

Were these solder in fuses?? What brand supply had plug in fuses?
