Computer & Internet nomenclature can be very confusing to the newbie cause not everyone uses the same terms to mean the same thing. Case-in-point, some people refer to their ''Start Page'' as their ''Homepage'' and vice versa.
Your START PAGE is whatever you have set in your browser to always open when you start it up. THAT is quite easy to tell if it gets ''hijacked'' or otherwise changed since you see something other than what you are expecting when you start up. You don't HAVE to have one set; mine is set to 'BLANK' (i.e. do not load ANY page, start with a blank screen) since I don't really want to wait for some page to load before I start surfing.
Your HOME PAGE is stored on a server someplace just like all the other webpages accessible on the internet. Although it is POSSIBLE to hijack a personal homepage, there really would not be much reason to do so. Hijackers usually have criminal intent in-mind and are looking for ID Theft information such as PII, SSN, CC#, Banking Account number & PIN's, ETC when they do that.
