External hard drive drops from network when TV is off???

Hi.

Recently got a new desktop (Win8) and was excited to hook it up to plasma tv. Folders on external WD drive are not available when the tv is off, though! When the tv is on, the folders are accessible on the network but I get an error that basically says I don't have permission/the drive isn't ready when the tv is off. I have made/shared folders on the C drive and they work fine when the tv is off so it is the external drive that are the problem (it happens with both a WD Elements and a WD My Book)Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?

Can you sketch the configuration?

There's a PC with Win8, a hooked up TV, a external drive and a network. But it's not clear how everything is connected.

My thought is power saving settings.

You'll want to ask your support about how to configure Windows 8 power settings.

The drive is attached to the computer by USB.
Computer, TV, and drive are all attached to the same surge protector.
Computer to receiver by HDMI and then to TV by HDMI.

I tried unplugging the HDMI and turning TV off -- still interrupts the transfer. I've also tried turning the TV manually instead of the remote and it still happens.

Files on the C drive are still available on the network but the folders/files on the WD drive aren't available. The error message says I don't have permission and the media isn't available. Turn the TV back on and I can get into the folder no problem.

That's standby or power off? Power off would be amazing, because I expect that to be same as TV disconnected from the receiver. And that would mean that network + PC + external disk wouldn't work without receiver and TV. While network + PC + external disk is a rather common configuration.

I'd play a little bit with devices (disconnect/power off the receiver also, use a normal monitor) and power outlets to get a better diagnosis.
