Defender mostly good enough, but needs SWAT team.
I have used Windows Defender for 3 years now, on all my machines. It has detected all serious attacks. Notice I only said 'detected'. On one occasion it it detected a serious attack but was unable to neutralise it. I cannot remember the name of the virus, but I can tell you now that I am so glad I had Spy Hunter in reserve just in case.
The virus was out of control, replicating itself all over the place, slowing down my system drastically and, as I found out later, sending infected spam mail to my whole address book. Just in time, I ran Spy Hunter in emergency mode. It swiftly dealt with the virus in boot time. I understand that Defender is unable to deal with virus that write to boot sector files. On this occasion Spy Hunter did the job.
Since then I have ensured that I have Spy Hunter on all my systems, not running all the time, but in reserve. However, I do run a system scan with it every week or so. I have also learned never to visit grubby web sites!!
I hope this helps.
A post script: Spy Hunter costs $39.99, but you get a lot of background support including a help desk which will customise solutions for your system.
