Belkin's Easy Transfer Cable for Windows 8

I hooked up Belkin's Easy Transfer Cable between our old Dell and our Windows 8 Dell computer and the program tells you not to use either computer during the transfer. I was transferring files over from Windows XP to Windows 8 and it took hours.

I have chaos. I have documents that belong in the document folder in the program folder.

It transferred over program files that I can't find.

My wife says to just delete them but I want to check what I will be deleting.

Dell isn't helpful. Their only answer is to connect to my PC but I told them they can't run the program for me because it says not to use the computer while the transfer is going on. And they would have to compare computers for hundreds of files and I feel like this is a privacy issue. They gave me their headquarter's phone number but they are closed.

Buying the cable made the computer a different price so there returning the cable would make the price of the computer not worth it.

You've found another reason why moderators here write so much about backup. If your backup system was up and running you would backup one more time to get your latest on the backup and then restore from that backup.

I've used Easy Transfer before and it's a little messy. I can see how it can be a big mess for some.

At least you didn't lose your files.

The Belkin cable is a backup method and when you can't trust a computer manufacturer and don't have hundreds of dollars, what do you do?

Backup on PCs is something that has lots of discussions. As you discovered this product is flawed and there appears to be no support for it.

I've seen issues with Windows Backup as well so I created my own system for backup and restore. It did not cost my hundreds but I find most folk don't backup. They discover why folk do backup later.

I suggest you get away from the Windows backup program and get yourself a good commercial backup program. I've seen forums fraught with problem reports for the Windows one. I know I was very unimpressed when I tried it. Three I'm familiar with and like are Norton Ghost (which I've been using for 8 years without the 1st problem), Easeus Todo Backup Free, which you can download from http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm and Memeo which has a 30 day free trial and you can buy it for $29.99 - you can download it from http://memeo.com . You can get Ghost for next to nothing (like I did) if you watch the sales.
The March 2012 issue of PC World was very high on the FREE program from Easeus and so is CNET. In my experience with a variety of configurations I have to say I'm very impressed. Like Ghost it will back up to a networked drive, and it will create a boot CD for when your PC won't boot. See CNET's review of it at

Some of these are free (last time I checked there were over 300), some have free trials (over 1000), and some are purchase only (over 200).

External hard drives are best for backup. You can get a 500 GB one for around $60 and a 1 TB one for around $70. You can also buy a 32 GB flash drive for under $15. It's the best insurance you can ever buy!

The reason I don't use Norton was because I was using it and got hit by a virus and Norton 360 ran by subscription. Norton takes a long time to run and Malwarebytes found the infection without spending hours. Symantec wanted to charge me $100 to reset the computer to its factory settings which I could do myself. Ever since that happened, I got rid of them because Norton slowed down the computer, wasted lots of time and I figured it wasn't worth it when I got infected. I felt the company was being reactive rather than proactive which left me vulnerable and when you use your home computer for work, its about not losing your job because you spent three hours and $200 with Dell technical support and another six hours installing a new hard drive, installing an operating system and drivers to get rid of the pest.

I agree that large thumbdrives or backup drives are the easiest way.
