Windows 8 networking changed a lot. Gone are some simple shares and the version of Windows 8 matters now.
There are too many reasons for this to fail such as the firewall in the router or any of the computers. I'm finding new consumers that will not turn off the router firewall so we have to tell them it doesn't work and show them it working on our router (if they pay!) where we turned it off.
This may be good news for tech support companies.

Interesting! Are you saying versions of Win 8 matter? I think I have the latest, but will check! Another Win 8 PC will connect. I;ll check its version, too. I have tried setting a new "rule" in the PC's firewall, but do not know how.

You have a lot to check. Firewalls, shares (I didn't read you have a network share) and more.
You can try the network share wizard but I have so little detail here that all I can do is nod.

Unless there's a share, it is not seen. There are a few folk that will want to correct me that there is a way to get a PC to be seen without a share but that's not called for. Why should a PC be seen on a network if it has nothing to say?

Yes,many shares on Dell T7500 Workstation. They work over gigabit network with four other PCs using XP, Win 7, and Win 8 -- but not the new IMAC.
Haven't tried removing firewall from router-- if it exisdts -- but why bshould that interfere with T7500 64 bit Win 8 Pro when it doesn't interfere with anoth Dell PC with same Win 8 PRO version?

I noted a common setting I change and rather than spend a few minutes testing it, I read this.
Sorry but this is a discussion and I'll share what I run into and what I do but at no time have I written this will fix it.
I see that this is unacceptable and you need to have Microsoft and Apple fix this for you.
