I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 and 8, and originally had 50 gigs allocated for the Windows 8 partition. I've since decided I'd like to expand the Windows 8 partition by another 50 gigs, which I already have unallocated on my hard drive.
However, the "Extend" option on the Windows 8 Partition is greyed out both while I'm running Windows 7 and 8.
Any suggestions? Do I need to mark the Windows 8 partition as active in order to extend it?

I think I read where others noted GPARTED to move partitions around so the extend option turns on.
HOWEVER if anyone was to do this without a backup, I guess they would learn why we backup.

that the partition where Win 8 is installed was created from the Windows 7 partition?
If so I suspect what you want to do can't be done without deleting that partition and re-partitioning again from within Windows 7 to give a 100 GB partition, then installing Windows 8 onto that.
What I think you're saying is that your Windows 7 had the whole partition and now has all but the 50GB allocated to Win 8. As I understand it, you cannot extend a partition to the left, (so to speak), of where it is now.
Win 7 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Win 8 _ _. This is what you have now but you want to change that to.
Win 7 _ _ _ _ _ Win 8 _ _ _ _ _
You can't do that and you have to start over.
I may be wrong but I am not sure even GParted can do that as it means moving the Win 8 OS backwards.
I agree though, backup Win 7 before you try anything. Win 8 doesn't matter as you are only testing it.
