My Acer lap-top has stopped picking up wi-fi - can you help?

My Acer lap-top (Aspire One D270, OS Windows 7 Starter) has stopped connecting to our wi-fi after working fine for about the last 4 months. It can't locate any networks (though my smartphone picks up the connection fine). Any help hugely appreciated!!

I can't tell about this particular model, but in general the options are:
1. The hardware is kaput.
2. There is some problem with the drivers (look in Device Manager) or a necessary helper program
3. You switched wireless off (the socalled 'airplane mode', because wireless should be turned of in airplanes). That's either a physical switch or some software, usually Fn + a function key

On most laptops, there's a small LED showing if wireless is on or off. Does yours have one? What does it show?

Airplane mode off but wifi still not working

Hi Kees, thanks for such a quick response. I tried the Fn key and you're right, it wi-fi wasn't on there; however, now that it is (and I've rebooted) its still not working. There light you mention for wi-fi isn't on, and at Device Manager there is a series of yellow exclamation marks beside all the Network Adapters (for example Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter or Wan Miniport SSTP). When I click on the options here a pop-up says "Device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. Code 31."

I've never seen it myself, but https://www.google.com/search?q=network+driver+code+31 gives a lot of hits, and quite a lot of them seem to be about how to solve it and being a success.

Thanks again Kees, tried quite a few of those remedies and none managed to do the trick unfortunately. It seems my last resort is to download windows update but I can't get online to do it! Might be take it to a shop time. Thanks a lot for all your help!
