Acer Aspire 3002LC Laptop (aka 3000) - Maximum RAM

When the laptop was new it only came pre-installed with 256mb, then I added another 256mb to the spare slot. That worked fine giving 512mb.
Now I have need to increase it again and purchased 2 x 1gb but the system only recognised it as 2 x 512mb = 1gb.
Now it's either the RAM that has been supplied incorrecty; or, the motherboard won't accept it.
Does anyone know about this, or had a similar problem?
Your help and comments would be appreciated.

Clarification request: Sometimes RAM is not compatible

Where did you get the new RAM sticks from?

If you visit http://www.crucial.com/ and run their memory tool, they will tell you what type of RAM you need and how much this computer can accept.
