Acer forum: I have a problem staying online

I have disconnected my wireless router. That did not help. I had the cable modem checked by a tech from my ISP. Modem is fine, getting the IPS address OK. I downloaded Error Expert and cleaned the registry, deleted all traces of McAfee and it worked for quite awhile. I have only been kicked offline once today so far, in the five hours or so that I've been online. Perhaps, maybe, I hope...the problem might be solved.

Let's hope it's OK. Not something I would do.

However there is a clue in your post about McAfee. Some of these internet suites drop the internet connection to protect the PC. Or when they expire.

There are other causes such as the date/time being wrong but given so few clues, it's a mystery still.

Today, I stayed online for about 6 hours without being kicked off, then rebooted, which usually reconnects me. This time it did not. A second reboot did, though. I'm wondering if my browser could be the cause. I use Mozilla Firefox and my email client is Thunderbird. I've noticed today that they seem to go to Not Responding very often.

With each post you make, you should be seeing it ask for details such as OS and more. For example is the machine is 4 years old, I often find the WiFi to die. It will create long discussions where the owner thinks they fixed it. But I don see much to work with here.

My machine is about a year and a half old, an Acer M3900G, running Windows 7. My internet provider is Mediacom. They've checked out the cable modem, that does not seem to be the problem. However, I am now finding that my browser, Mozilla Firefox v. 11.0 and my email client, Thunderbird v. 11.0.1 are locking up unexpectedly, too. Might be a separate problem, might be related. I did have a router, but that has been disconnected.

That lock up is a sign. Not a good one. At 1.5 years you've cleaned it once like you see at http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11319_7-6240575-1.html

You also would have not installed Spybot since it was known to conflict with some antivirus apps.

You continue to tell so little. Can you speed up and do something like reveal a HIJACKTHIS log?

When a machine is misbehaving we think about when it worked and what changed. I don't have that history but looking at the first five lines has me think "Seems optional. Wonder why they haven't cut this back and more?"

Then I see 3 or more security apps. This is also an area of trouble for some. I'd think that over and get rid of such as they can conflict and cause the issue under discussion.

Let's be clear that while I know many of the common conflicts, this machine's log file has some new combination that I can't know if it works. I know that this is over twice as big a log file as a normal machine so you have your work cut out for you.

That is, it's not going to be an easy get rid of this answer.
