hi guys
i have a old acer t671 which supports the socket lga775 ... and i also have a spare celeron E3300 which also supports the same socket designation... however when i tried the E3300 in the T671 it refused to boot
now would a bios update help... or would it be better buying a cheap lga775 board to use the E3300
i know for a fact that the T671 motherboard ( model : mrs600m ) supports up to the core 2 duo E6400... and ive tried to find a cpu support list for the above motherboard but acer seem to keep this information top secret
any help will be much appreciated

And such information is not revealed for good reason. There is no support staff for such and consumers would think that such information would mean such changes are supported.

Bios update, then compare

You can do a bios update, it won't hurt if done properly. provided that is all well and good, then check with your replacement cpu. If it still doesn't work, then it wasn't supported. Looking at the specs for that T671, it seems typical what other cpus may work. You have to compare specs to get a match to at least be similar. OEM systems tend to be conservative, so you can't go overboard or it falls into a slim area of upgrades. If Acer doesn't supply much, they don't support it. Alas, is there is an upgrade path provided via some wares option, check and see, then buy where you can. Find out what your specs for installed cpu, then compare to E3300. I would suspect some auto-config from the bios, thus that's where the bios comes in. However, not always auto-setting, if any manual config. or reset to defaults(clear CMOS), then install. Also, give it time, it may take longer.
