I have a Acer M5811 I5 Windows 7 64 bit that constantly shuts down & restarts randomly until the operating system crashes. This has going on since I bought it 18 months ago. It's been back to Staples twice under the warranty and 3 times under the extended service plan. Each time the answer is the same. They've re-installed the Windows, it's not running hot, they've done a stress test, all is fine. Once back home the sporadic sequence of shutdowns - as infrequently as once an hour or it can be as bad as 5 shutdowns/restarts in 10 minutes - starts again until after a few weeks the inevitable crash occurs. I've checked out all hardware drivers, all windows updates are properly installed, fan's going, no dust in the sinks and my other deskop runs fine when plugged to the same power source. Is the problems with windows or acer or staples? I'm about to give up on this thing and call it a day & go get myself a Mac.

My brothers acer computer did the same i did some investigating and found out one of the memory chips were bad;

I am having the same problem with my M8511 shutdown & rebooting. You said " .... some investigating and found out one of the memory chips were bad"

By memory chip do you mean RAM?

I have the same exact computer and issue. I've replaced the power supply, tested the ram with memtest, wiped the OS replaced the video card. I'm about to replace the motherboard (then CPU). I would really like to know what is worng with this computer. I will post my results if and when i replace the main board.

Hi

We replaced the power supply and the problem recurred within 1/2 hr.

Randomly chose and removed 1 RAM stick and problem hasn't recurred in six days !!!! ... had been multiple shut downs in a day prior.
Plan to change out with another RAM stick to see if problem returns - bad RAM? - and if it doesn't, the alternate plan is to swap around to check if it is the slot that was causing the problem.

Will post results as we go.

It was a purely random choice and DIMM 3 was removed .... :-/

No screams of frustration here happy - day 13.

Haven't had a chance to check if faulty RAM or slot faulty yet ... but living in the moment and don't care --- first time in well over twelve months and twice sent back to ACER that it isn't causing strife.

Just to update, I brought it back to Staples again in February. They sent to to their service centre who advised this time they couldn't fix it. They offered me a gift card for approximately 65% of the purchase price if I'd go away and stop bothering them. Things being what they were, I accepted. I'll continue follow any posts on this though.
