Connecting Sound on Acer Aspire One NB to Bose Music System

I have Acer Aspire One Netbook PC, running on Windows XP. I want to connect sound output to a Bose Music System, using 3.5mm stereo male-male connector, to hear MP3 files. So far, no joy. For one, when I connect one male end to the headphone jack on right side of the Acer, I would expect not to hear anything from the Acer -- but I do. As to the Bose, on the hand controller, I selected AUXilliary to bring in signal from other device. No luck. Would appreciate helpful suggestions.
