why does my monitor suddenly go red and blurry

i have an HP a6240a home PC and running windows 7 . i have no problem with the pc but it is connected to an Acer P series monitor. up until the last 3 days i have had no problems with it but now, suddenly it will go blurry and red. i can push the menu button on the monitor but it is frozen and wont let me access it. i would like to point out that, this only happems when i am watching a movie. the only way around it is to, turn off the monitor, disconnect it, wait 1 hour, reconnect it with installtion cd and the monitor comes back to normal until i try to play another media file. it has happened 3 times so far, i don't want to have to buy a new monitor unless it is necessary. it seems strange to me, that it only happens whilst playing a media file. i was hoping the vast knowledge of cnet members would be able to help me resolve this kind regards, cathy maley

There is a known issue with some files so let's lead off with ideas.

1. FLASH = Turn off hardware acceleration in FLASH.
2. Player issue. Try VLC PLAYER.
