OK here goes, I turn on my ACER 5517, this appears-HARDDISK SECURITY, SATA port 0, Hitachi HTS545016B9ALOCK. I hit the esc. key and this appears- Check cable connection,(it's working). PXE-MOF:exiting intel PXE-ROM. (what?). And finally- No bootable device-insert bootdisk and press any key(don't have bootdisk). So what do I do? I know the simple solution is to find the bootdisk, but it's long gone. I'm open for ideas, including using this unit as a paper weight. Thanks GrumpyAL

I've yet to find a boot disk fix this one. When HDD locks are involved we replace the HDD because the cost to send the drive out for unlocking exceeds the replacement cost of the HDD.
Read http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/139402-harddisk-security-lock-error-help.html and hope the BIOS can be cleared of it but my run-ins with this one have been nothing but painful.
It's a shame folk are not warned of the consequences.

Thanks for the info. So let me get this right. I start by swapping in a new hard drive? Do I stay with the same GB thats in there now or can I go bigger? Are they all the same, or is one mfg. better than the rest. I'm only using this laptop to check email and occasionally a game of solitaire, i'm not trying to get into NORAD. I'm guessing that I'll have to reinstall Windows. I questioned a local "GEEK" and he said that ACER( for a price) will send me a boot disk.
Once again, thank you for all your help, if you ever need help with nailing two pieces of wood together, let me know.

I would have swapped in a drive long ago. SATA drives for laptops are almost always interchangeable however let's hope you don't over invest in an expensive HDD.
Also, since this can be fixed by ACER, why isn't that an option?
