On the aod255 and aod260, there is an added complication that if you check Acer's web site, it says that the memory can not be upgraded in these models. I thought it was because the memory is such a pain to access (and it is - step one is taking out the keyboard), but I wasn't sure. In the back of my mind was the thought that maybe it couldn't be expanded for a hardware related reason.
The main problem with getting single rank RAM is that manufacturers don't seem to care. I called a local store who told me over the phone that they had Crucial memory in stock - they didn't. They had two other $24 brands (the two I had already tried), and PNY for $10 more. I took the PNY off the shelf and saw it was 2 rank RAM, but when I went to put it back on the peg, I noticed the one behind it was 1 rank. Out of 10 packages with the same part number and UPC code, about half were 1 rank and half 2 rank. I don't think manufacturers much care. So this may be memory you have to buy in person, or at least verify over the phone.
Anyhow, I bought the $34 PNY because I simply couldn't bear the thought of reassembling and the disassembling this Acer again. All's well that ends well, and so far, its working great!
