Aspire one can't find half my ram

I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook with windows XP. I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to Vista, I was wrong>. I don't know what went wrong but as I was loading some drivers it crashed, at one point my computer didn't even know it had a C: partition. I installed XP after hours and hours and more hours of booting rebooting trying one thing or another. I am not the greatest at fixing computers but I can search and read amazingly! Anyway, I Installed xp and everything seems to be working fine except now it says I have 500 mb ram when I had 1000 before. Anybody know where my ram went?? Or better yet how I can get it back.

Unrecognized RAM

When you enter the BIOS of the machine, does it show the correct amount of RAM?
