What I find are many folk unaware about 300 cycle batteries and how an old battery can tax or even fry the motherboard. Your story is incomplete. How many years old is this battery and does it work without it?

I bought the laptop about 2 years ago.
It does the same thing (cycles) if the battery is in, or the battery is out and the power cable is in. It makes no difference which power source is used. I don't think it is an issue with power.

It sounds like the usual failed laptop. You can try the usual of removing the CD/DVD, hard drive and any added ram. Out of warranty repair usually is the motherboard and can run as much as a new laptop.
But try removing parts and hope it powers up and stays up as that could mean a failed ram or other part than the motherboard.

I removed what parts I could and if that doesn't help I replace the main board.
As I do this some hundred times a year I hope you fare better.
