gps problems

I have a Galaxy S, model samsung-sgh-i997r.,Firmware Version 2.3.3, etc.

My problem is in receiving a GPS signal within 10 minutes and that is strong enough to trust it as I hike in the mountains.
Is there something I can do to boost the signal?

We know that GPS takes time for the module to lock onto the satellites and while it's been a great advance in tech, no hiker would ever trust it as the only way to hike out. Be sure you have your old fashioned map and compass handy.
