need advice from Android expert

I am limping along with a Motorola Q (Verizon) running Windows Mobile 6.1 and am thinking about buying an Android to replace it - trying to decide between the HTC Incredible and Samsung Fascinate. I have about 500 business contacts and my work calendar that I sync with MS Outlook. Will I be able to continue to do this? If not, is there a 3rd party app that makes it possible? Also, is it possible to sort and view contacts by employer? After playing with the phones in the store I haven't been able to this, but maybe I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've subscribed. Let me share that I wrote apps for WM 4.0 to 6.5 and now am working on a port to android with the Sprint EVO 4G for our first demo.

While syncing with outlook is supported, I never found Outlook to sort as you asked. Group? Yes, but your request sounds different.

The good news is that if you found a droid app developer they might write an app like that.

Samsung Fascinate

IMO, the Fascinate is the better phone between the two. It has a faster processor. I have the Fascinate and my friend has the Incredible. Played with her phone and wasn't too impressed. Maybe check out info and read the buzz on both phones in the Android Forums (androidforums.com) before you decide. If you can hold off a little longer, there should be some Android phones with dual core processors coming out early next year.

But my wife's laptop is some i7 1GB dedicated hot air machine. (laptop) I can't use such a thing and pulled back to the i5 with switchable graphics.

My cell phone is an old pokey evo 4g. Funny how fast it was outdated.

I wasn't referring to the question(s) regarding Outlook/email. I was referring to "trying to decide between the HTC Incredible and Samsung Fascinate." And I mentioned the dual core processor phones coming out soon so that they know there are newer/faster options right around the corner if he/she has a little time to wait on it in case it is something they might be interested in.

Outlook sync is going to cause some trouble but here they wanted a SORT option that I have yet to see in Outlook. It appears that no CPU or speedup would cure that.

Outlook sorting

Actually you can sort by employer in Outlook. There is a "Company" field in each contact. You can then sort your contacts by this field in the old Windows phones and it comes in handy when you have over 500 biz contacts. That's why I'm looking for this functionality in my next Android phone. It would be great if I could by the phone, sync it with Outlook, and not have to mess with adding them all in maually.

Back to the Droid. It's "People" or contacts phone book is not up to this task. You'll have to replace that first.

Exchange ActiveSync on HTC Incredible

I've got 1,000+ contacts and sync email, calendar, contacts with Outlook Exchange Server to my Android phone using Exchange ActiveSync (built into the phone). Contacts sort by "fileAs" field in Outlook. Haven't tried to sort in Outlook by company field and then resync.

I read your post and have a few comments. First I ahve over 3,000 contacts and keep a very busy calendar. The performance of the phone with this many contacts is slow. One of the major reasons is that there are very few settings. Example It keeps a history of all calls. After three months I had over 1,000 calls listed. It crippled the phone. Second the calendar option is Purple and black. VERY HARD TO READ. In addition if you are used to having a phone number in your subject feild for conference calls it will not allow you to touch the number to call. VERY FRUSTARTING. I have a blackberry, Apple, Samsung Fascinate. I have been told that Andriod 2.2 will help. Not sure. I ahve sent over thirty suggestions to Samsung to work on the issues. If you want a new device great. If you want a new device that helps you save time. Wait...

The default "People" app in most droids is the biggest hurdle here. While People (or contacts) does work it does not give you the Views you are looking for.

-> Syncing is not likely to be any big issue here unless folk hobble themselves with "I won't use ______ to sync."

Find your new droid contact manager first.
