DLNA with Panasonic DMR-BS880

A little over a year back I purchased a DMR-BS880 freesat hard disk BD recorder for use with our TX-P50G10B TV. At the time I wastold it had something called DLNA server - which meant that it would be able to access Video stored on a Windows 7 PC and that content recorded on the Hard drive would be accessible to watch in other rooms equipped with a DLNA TV or fed from s DLNA certified device.
I have now got a Windows 7 laptop - and have been attempting to access video content on the PC using Media Player 12. Panasonic have a video on YouTube - but it seems to only cover access using a DLNA TV, and the remote content is then accessed using the Viera tools button. My TV is not DLNA certified (too old I think!) but since the recorder IS, why can I NOT 'see' the Windows Media player files on the laptop?
I have looked through the network setup onthe DMR-BS880 and it CAN 'see' the PC - at least its MAC address appears in the list - but as the remote does not have a Viera Tools button I can see no way of accessing it. I have also tried working the other way i.e. FROM the recorder TO the laptop. The laptop can see the DMR-BS880 within Windows Media player but the former does not allow access.
Can anyone help me out here wih understanding what SHOULD and SHOULD NOT be possible? Panasonic Tech Support have not responded to my email. I am beginning to suspect the the DLNA 'feature' of the DMR-BS880 can only be read by DLNA ready televisions and not other devices. My original objective was to be able to play ideo recorder on the recorder in the living room on a (non-DLNA) TV in a bedroom.
