converting video files..how to do it???

I just bought a Panasonic DMP-BDT-210 Blu-Ray player. I have a lot of .avi files on my home computer that I'd like to play on my new BDT 210 and my HD TV via the USB and SD Card features.

I've tried to convert them to .mpeg2 files and or .MKV formats.

Can someone with some experience help me out?

I'd like to do this with a free converter on the internet if possible.

While I do use HANDBRAKE I do not have your devices. So give it a try.

file converters

Handbrake does convert my files to .mkv and they work great with the USB device. But for the SD Card reader ihas to see MPEG2 or AVCHD file format. I don't think Handbrake will do those formats??

I tried Any Video Converter, but the Panasonic will not recognize the files???? So many switches and check boxes????

Frankly? Stick with USB Sticks.

Panasonic would hobble a very nice device to only play just a few formats, and add a card reader that I just can't get to work with anything. I'm considering sending it back. Is there any brand that supports all, or at least more formats?

The media players in such products are subject to patents that may or may not allow such. I know consumers will think that the maker "hobbled" the products but what I'm finding is patents often mean you can only add so much for the price.
