Well, I don't need to back up ALL my songs but after spending $400, and subtracting the hard drive space for the required software plus whatever programs I may want I really don't want to be worried about space.

To tell you the truth the 64GB would suffice it's just that I was wondering if in a few months the newer version will include a bigger hard drive as part of their upgrades to the ipod touch.

yes ... I've done that with ALL my Ipods. I don't like to store on my hard drive for various reasons because if my hard drive goes (for whatever reason) so do my songs. What I do is back up all my songs once through a transfer program and save it on a more reliable hard disc.

if anything happens to my ipod (which it has) i just restore it froim my discs.

computer, you can always use a large, and relatively cheap, external drive to store all your music on.

that wherever iTunes and its music is located, the music tracks are "stored" on a hard drive, be it internal or external.

The OP was concerned about using up the HD space on the computer, which is why they do not use iTunes. Using iTunes as you suggested means that the tracks have to be "stored" somewhere.

The external suggestion was in reference to their concern about internal HD space, the external is no more prone to failure than the internal.

Hmm .. all good points I guess it comes down to which you prefer or have more confidence in being more reliable. I just choose to store most of my media files on the Ipod itself and backup on an external that I just set aside and don't use for anything else. The lower GB ones (20-40GB) sell for very cheap so to me it's worth it, especially if my computer gets a virus or something or even Itunes somehow has problems with synching (or any other problem which I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had one with using Itunes to transfer media).

I ended up purchasing the Ipod touch and figured the around 60BG to play with should be enough, especially considering that my music catalog was only about 32GB. Count the various videos I may put on from time to time and whatever apps or games I also put on I just hope I don't have to micro manage the hard drive space too much.


Even if a 120BG touch model is announced I won't be too upset because I feel I got a really good deal that the newer model would ever match that price in at least a year from now.
