Any hope for my computer? (Hp pavilion g7 series)

Ill try to make this brief but I do need to give you details.
One day when I was on my computer I heard a really loud clank clank sound around the fan. I immediately turned it off. I waited a little then turned it back on. I was presented with a screen saying it detected something wrong with the fan and recommended not powering on. I agreed.
I have never opened up a laptop before this (plenty of desktops, I am SOMEWHAT tech savvy, enough to usually get by). I don't believe I did any permanent damage opening it up although there were a few times I tried pulling it off with a screw still attached (for example I didn't know there was a screw behind the keyboard).
I opened it up and saw nothing in the fan but there was a small plastic something (screw size) on the floor so figured that was what had broken off.
I put the cables back to how they were and put it all back together and nothing happened when I hit power.
I then took it all apart and found out I forgot to put the power button cable in. Did that but noticed it may not be "snapping closed" as well so that could be the plastic piece maybe. Regardless I put it back together and the power light beside the power button was on even before hitting power. But, hitting power did not turn the computer on.
I redid everything in my last attempt last night, and now it's back to no power light and still doesn't turn on.
I suspect when I open it tonight th cable isn't plugged in.
My biggest concern is that with my opening it up I may have somehow broke the motherboard.
If I get a power light beside the power button, and a light beside the power chord when I plug it in, is it still possible the motherboard is dead?
I know you can't possibly know what I may have overlooked when putting it back together but does anything jump out of your mind?
If it was the clip that holds the power button cable in that broke off, is that hard/possible/expensive to fix?
If it matters I have a hp pavilion g7 series
