Sony VAIO VPCEA36FM laptop won't play DVDs

I have a Sony VAIO VPCEA36FM laptop that's about two years old (with an expired warranty) and I'm having trouble with the BD-ROM drive. The drive will read CDs with no problem. However, it is having trouble reading both regular DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. It can play the occasional DVD/Blu-Ray but then when I switch discs, it won't recognize the new one. This problem has been going on for several days and I don't know what to do. I tried reverting the laptop to an earlier point in time, but that didn't help. I also downloaded an update for Corel WinDVD but that didn't help either. Sometimes I'll go into the "Computer" control panel and it looks like there's a DVD in the drive. Other times, the drive doesn't recognize the DVD at all. What gives?

Please help. I'd really appreciate it.

Are there any errors shown in device manager germane to the drive? Did you try a driver upgrade?, again, device manager.

In fact, my computer tells me that the drive is working just fine even though it isn't.

If the drive is over 2 years old

I always swap the drive after I clean the lens and re-test. Your average consumer may insist you do something more heroic or ask if the drive can be fixed.
