New HDD in a Toshiba Satellite A60

I have an old Toshiba Satellite A60. The old 30gb Toshiba HDD (MK3025GAS) has died. I have bought a 60gb Toshiba HDD (MK602GAX) as a replacement.

My problem is that I can't get the bios to see the new drive and boot off it. The bios for the old dead disc says under 'Built in HDD = Primary IDE (1F0H/IRQ14)'. With the new HDD it says 'Built in HDD = No Drive'.

Is there something I need to configure or have a bought a non compatible HDD ?

These were common way back when but did happen.

Also, some IDE drives have you put jumpers to indicate Master, Slave or CS. Did you try all 3 settings/jumpers?

Have tried all the different jumper combinations with no joy. Any other Ideas anyone ?

I'd shop for a drive consistent with those days. In other words, another sub 32GB drive.

And did you test the failed drive? It would be a shame to chase down drives if the old drive was actually good.

Under the Smartdrv.exe this file in the Windows directory.

Installation from DOS, you need to load Smartdrv.exe, and then run under the I386 directory of the Winnt.exe.
Under the Smartdrv.exe this file in the Windows directory. [img]http://www.hellodog.info/hardware.gif[/img]

Sorry, don't understand this reply. I have a blank disc, so there is no dos or windows directory.

As the old PC can not recognize the HDD, just update the BIOS in http://www.toshiba.com
