default monitor 'not active' in settings / display

This is a Dell Latitude D830, running Windows XP. I had it hooked up to an external monitor, both screens were working, and I was moving things to the external when I wanted to. My cat walked across the keyboard and somehow made the laptop monitor become not active. How do I re-activate? It is not the fn/f8 CRT toggle. Nor is it Ctrl+Alt+f12.

Extending the desktop? (again?) And system restore to when it worked?
