How do you run an HP printer/scanner without HP software?

Wirelessly!

I have a 2011 21.5 iMac (i5,4gb,) running current version of Lion 10.7.3 and have a HP printer/scanner (desk jet 3054)that came with it as part of an offer.
I set it up with the HP software and it ran well wirelessly... until it didn't. It wouldn't scan. Also the software started hogging the CPU and the % grew by the day.
Both these issues have been documented by others around the net. Anyways I have it working just fine using Image Capture but plugged in via usb. I can't get it working without the cable and I do not want the crappy HP software back.
Any ideas. Thanks

I think you have to use the USB. But wireless?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_USB is our launch point to see if we can find WUSB.

Manufacturer's Software and Freeware/Shareware

For the HP Printer you should be able to download the Driver for the Printer only from the HP Downloads website.

I had this HP Printer scanner software problem on an HP Printer at work and I was able to find a free software package that would drive the scanner. Not as good as the HP software, however, adequate if you're not scanning tons of documents. Just type in "Free Scanner Software" into a search engine and have at it. Usually they will state whether they are generic or not. I had no problems with my download, but, caveat emptor!!

it's currently driving an Epson Perfection, an Epson 810 scanner and a Nikon SuperCool 4000 slide scanner (sadly only on loan)

It does all of the above without a problem with software that is at least equal to the original.
