I have a hobby of helping seniors with their computer needs / repairs. I was contacted by an elderly lady with a "slow" computer - running xp. I determined it had only 512M - crucial mem indicated two 256's. I ordered two 512's and when I went to install found...two 256's connected together (I think soldered but highly taped together with two wires going from the top-most - furthest from the connector stick to the motherboard). I stopped dead - never saw this before. I did not remove it because the two wire are so so short there is little play - so I do not know for sure there is another slot under the one that is visible. Has anyone seen this? If I remove and there are two slots will it work once I disconnect these two wires??

It was to get 256MB sticks to work where they didn't work. The wire was to add a missing CHIP SELECT line and was intended to be done as the LAST GASP UPGRADE POSSIBLE back then. No one expected the machine to last much longer so they said OK.

Thanks for the quick reply...so what happens if I pull that double stick out and plug in two 512's?? As I mentioned I did not see first hand that there are two slots but the Toshiba website says there are. This older lady barely uses the machine - just emails to a son in Australia. I cannot help but wonder ....did they make laptops with only one slot? I got a feeling that this is the way it came from the factory??? The lady has no recollection of the pc ever being worked on. Will it work with the wires unconnected? This is a repair I am beginning to regret taking on.
Since it is an XP shouldn't the OS readily accept up to 2G memory? What am I missing??

I can't know if this machine was one that I did MANY YEARS AGO. It's possible that it was a FACTORY INSTALLED job since we got this detail from the maker many many years ago.
When you get into very old machines you will encounter stuff like this and my advice is to get an OK that any work may result in a dead machine.

Never even considered it might be one you worked on - I like your idea. I do think it was a factory job - perhaps way back then two 256s were cheaper than one 512.
