If the laptop is a goner already, why not just take it apart first. I did replace a screen on an IBM T-42 and it wasn't that bad. I can't speak for the Gateway but the trick was in how the frame snaps together around the edges. You'll probably need to remove a few screws and will need a thin flat tool to separate the halves of the frame. Since you've already done the keyboard, you'll probably need to remove that anyway as the connections are under it. There will be at least 3. One will be the ribbon cable for the display. Another will be for the inverter for the CF tube (backlight) and another may be for the wifi antenna which is just a wire routed on one side of the frame and possibly across the top. If you can get the screen out, I'd look on the back for a part number. Some models have choices of screen and screen type so you'll want one to match exactly. For the one I fixed for my wife, I bought a used screen from a laptop parts place using that part number as a reference to be sure it was the right one. I had less difficulty putting it back together than getting it apart because I could see how it was to line up. Go ahead and give it a shot. Good luck.
