Dell XPS 17 or HP dv7t?

Hello all,

I am considering a new high-performance laptop. My computer usage will
include internet browsing, basic documents, some video editing, basic 3d
animation, and a few advanced games.

My primary games would probably be Microsoft FSX (flight simulator) and
the upcoming Microsoft Flight. I know that these are very demanding
programs, but I would like to achieve decent frame rates with good
quality.

A 17 inch screen is mandatory. Battery life is also important, but only
for basic tasks; I will do almost all my gaming and editing while
plugged in.

I have narrowed my choices to the following two laptops (I may still be
open to other suggestions). I don't want to spend any more than what I'd
pay for either of these.

My research has indicated that the HP has a better size, weight, heat,
and battery life, while the Dell has a better screen. Is this so? Also,
I'm not sure I like the bulging 9 cell battery on the Dell. Is it that
noticeable?

If anyone has any advice regarding these choices, I would very much appreciate your input. Thanks!

But HP's service issues has me pan them everytime. It's a story of how HP can't correct flaws in their products such as a machine that won't boot with a smart phone plugged in. HP's story is they buy the BIOS and can't correct it. There's more to this story but HP seems to have lost control of the designs.

Dell is still in the game so of the two, the dell gets a nod. Be sure you can live with the hot surfaces.

I would think the Dell

would get better battery life since it has a 9 cell battery and probably a less powerfull Graphics card.

Now I still use Dell XPS 17.I like its screen and its other performances.
Besides,its battery life is long.

a key issue for you and if these model have the 3rd generation i series processor you will get better battery life. I also know that HP does offer you to purchase 12 cell batteries but they don't have them for all models. You have to remember that there really isn't that much difference between batteries (at least ones with the same number of cells) from brand to brand. The batteries are only made by a few companies that's why the one year we have the major recall of batteries that potentially could explode covered multiple brands of laptops.

Also the more powerfull components the battery has to power the less the battery. The backlit keyboard will affect battery time a bit. Intel finds new ways to conserve power with each new processor release and this is why the the i series 3rd generation is a little better then the 2nd generation.

Another thing is most of the time the published battery life is tested in an extreme way to get the longest batteries times and not what you get using in real conditions. I never use my laptop with brightness at the lowest point and typically most are tested with the screen at the dim point to get as high a number as possible.

This is the machine I would buy if mine failed and I love the biggest screen possible. Now i have a 18.4" screen.

They have this model in a bunch of configurations. A cheaper way togo may be to just get 1 750 drive and if you want a SSD buy it separately and put it in yourself. I don't think the model with the 1 750 hd comes with only a DVD reader and not a reader/burner like the model in the link.
