Toshiba laptop: chicony usb 2.0 camera

Ok, I'm unsure whether this is the place to come for help, but I am a very impatient person. I must warn that I am quite clueless when it comes to things like this, excuse my ignorance.

I have a Toshiba a210 satellite laptop (if that matters) with a chicony usb 2.0 camera built in. Now this laptop about 3 years old, and runs on vista. The camera has rarely worked but I'd like it to now. I checked it in device manager and it tells me the device is working properly and the drivers are up to date. When I attempt to use it, it tells me there is an error. All I'd like to do is learn how to use this camera.

What I find with these web cams is that folk tend to update drivers and kill its operation. Given the usual fix is to reload the OS most of us will use an external camera since reloading the OS causes folk to discover they didn'tbackup.
